Carbonmark was spun out of an open-source initiative known as Klima, one of the early projects to leverage blockchain technology for an application within carbon markets.
Klima’s launch in 2021—though experimental—produced tangible results and attracted broad participation from traditional market stakeholders. However, adoption challenges persisted: many stakeholders were intrigued by Klima’s innovations but lacked the necessary knowledge of Web3 technology to participate effectively.
Recognizing this gap, the team set out to build an intuitive platform that simplified access to tokenized carbon credits while abstracting away blockchain complexities. In 2023, Carbonmark was established to bridge the divide between traditional carbon markets and blockchain-enabled efficiencies—while preserving core benefits such as transparency, traceability, automation, and cost-effectiveness.
Over time, our platform has evolved to integrate tokenized carbon credit retirement directly into traditional software systems, leveraging novel smart contracts to unlock new automations and programmability for carbon credits. Additionally, features such as automated retirement via APIs and a user-friendly marketplace enable broader engagement with the blockchain-enabled carbon market.
Since 2020, Carbonmark’s core team has been developing blockchain solutions for environmental markets. With over 50 years of collective experience, our experts specialize in carbon project development, environmental asset trading, financial technology, and emissions analysis software.
