The Bujagali Hydropower Project is a run-of-river hydropower facility on the Victoria Nile in the Republic of Uganda. The Project sponsor is Bujagali Energy Limited (“BEL”), a project-specific company owned by affiliates of SN Power and the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (“AKFED”). 

Total installed capacity of the Project consists of five 51 MW turbines, which are estimated to supply 1,404 GWh per year to the local electricity grid. The scenario existing prior to the start of the project activity is the operation of existing grid connected power plants and addition of new power sources. The renewable electricity delivered to the grid by Bujagali would have otherwise been generated by the combination of existing and prospective fossil fuel and renewable based grid-connected power plants. 

Uganda has long suffered from lack of electricity, and the problem has become acute in recent years. While the emergency thermal generation program of the Government helps to address short term needs, the Project is needed to address the medium and long-term need for economical, large-scale, power generation in Uganda. The Project and power supply options for Uganda have been the subject of extensive planning and analysis by BEL and others.
