Opening Up Cercarbono Credits to New Global Buyers

Holders of Cercarbono-certified credits on EcoRegistry can now move them to Carbonmark, sell or retire them with public proof, and move them back, with matching records on both registries.

Carbonmark and EcoRegistry today announce that their systems are now connected in both directions. Credits certified under the Cercarbono standard and recorded on EcoRegistry can be connected and listed on Carbonmark at the seller's own price, and bought or retired by any buyer, from a single company to a software platform. Every retirement is recorded on both registries, and credits can be returned to EcoRegistry at any time.

The connection closes the gap that has long separated where a credit is issued from where it is sold. Until now, moving a credit from a registry to a buyer typically meant a broker, a spreadsheet, an invoice and a wait for a manual transfer. Between EcoRegistry and Carbonmark, it now means a few clicks and a few seconds.

What the connection does

A credit holder starts the transfer inside their EcoRegistry account. The credits arrive in their Carbonmark account within seconds and can be listed for sale immediately, or held and returned to EcoRegistry whenever the holder chooses. When a credit is retired through Carbonmark, the underlying credit is retired in EcoRegistry’s system and the generated retirement certificate is made available to the Carbonmark user. Step-by-step instructions are in our technical guide here.

Two platforms with a shared record

EcoRegistry has recorded every unit on a distributed ledger since it launched, so a credit's chain of custody is traceable from issuance to retirement. Carbonmark uses a public blockchain (Base) as its system of record; every listing, sale and retirement is a published transaction with nothing to reconcile afterward. Connecting the two directly means a buyer, an auditor or a project developer can follow a tonne end to end without asking anyone to trust a spreadsheet. We think this is what the connection between a registry and a marketplace should look like: direct, verifiable on both sides, and settled in seconds rather than weeks.

Opening up Cercarbono supply to the world

Cercarbono is a global crediting program, with 212 registered projects across 28 countries and 136 million carbon credits issued. In August 2026, the ICVCM confirmed Cercarbono as CCP-Eligible at program level, and assessment of its methodologies is ongoing. EcoRegistry has been its registry provider since 2018. Forestry currently leads Cercarbono's supply, anchored by REDD+ projects run by Afro-descendant and Indigenous communities on the Pacific coast and in the Amazon basin. Reforestation, agriculture and land use, renewable energy and methane abatement complete a portfolio that continues to diversify by sector and geography. Cercarbono's standard has recently been recognized by Environmental Finance for the second time in consecutive years.

You can already view one available Cercarbono project on Carbonmark: Proyecto REDD+ PAZcífico Sur in Nariño.

What this means for project developers and buyers

  • Project developers reach a global buyer base directly. One listing is visible across every Carbonmark channel at once, including the Marketplace, partner integrations and our API. Sellers set their own price and are paid the moment a credit sells.
  • Buyers get credits they can verify, not just invoice. Every retirement comes with a public Carbonmark certificate and a matching EcoRegistry certificate, so a sustainability report can point to proof on both registries.
  • Both sides skip the detour. No manual reconciliation, no waiting for a wire or a manual retirement settlement.

Andrew Bonneau, CEO of Carbonmark, stated: "For too long, the registry where a credit is born and the market where it is sold have been separate worlds, joined by email and spreadsheets. Connecting EcoRegistry and Carbonmark directly gives project developers a straight line to global buyers, and gives those buyers proof they can check for themselves."

Regarding the technical framework of this integration, Juan David Duran Hernandez, CEO of EcoRegistry, commented that “Clear rules, and transparency in interoperability processes are the key to build the foundations of an international carbon market.”

What comes next

Both platforms are aligning their data on the open Carbon Data Open Protocol (CDOP) so a credit's record reads the same wherever it lands; EcoRegistry was one of the 37 founding signatories of CDOP 1.0. Fractional retirement of EcoRegistry credits, down to 1 kg, is in progress.
